Under the model car's opening boot lies a replica of the specially developed RENESIS rotary engine that launches the real Mazda RX-8 from 0-60mph in just over 6 seconds, and giving a top speed of 146mph.
In 1999 the ``RX-Evolv'' concept car was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. It was a distinctive-looking, very angular sports coupe with a difference - it was a 2+2 featuring four doors, with the rear doors rear-hinged and front-opening in the manner of those found on the sides of pickup cabs.
The muscular design maintains classic sports car proportions while adding a Zoom-Zoom edge that is unmistakably Mazda. Integrated throughout the exterior is the unique triangular rotor design, which clearly can be seen in the front fascia, head lamps, hood and rear bumper valence. Mazda believes this new four-door sports car is poised to become a Mazda brand icon. One of the most revolutionary features of the RX-8 is the "freestyle doors" with no centre pillars, which Mazda first employed in the RX-EVOLV concept.
